Ji So-yun and the Korean Women’s National Team will return to the United States for 2 friendlies as part of the USWNT post Olympic series after winning the Bronze medal in Tokyo.
The first exhibition game will be October 21 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City (on US TV on ESPN2 and TUDN), kickoff at 8pm EST. Five days later on October 26th, they will go again at St Paul, Minnesota, kickoff at 8pm EST (TV on TUDN).
It will coincide with Carli Lloyd’s final games in US uniform. The 39 year old surprised the footballing world last week by suddenly announcing her retirement for both club (NJ/NY Gotham FC) and country.
The last time Korea and the US played each other on Oct 6, 2019, Ji So-yun drew first blood, but it was none other than Carli Lloyd who equalized. The game ended 1:1 to end the Jill Ellis era, one that brought the US two back to back World Cups.
* It’s been awhile since the Tavern published anything. We’re not exactly back. In fact, by the end of the month, we’ll be closing the Tavern for good. However, there’s just a few last items to finish before we go riding off into that good night. One of which is curating articles that we think is worth preserving regarding Korean football circa 2012-2020 (and archiving that on a free blog site, maybe on blogger, TBD). The other is putting out perhaps one or two more long form and Q&A interview items that I hadn’t finished yet. They’ve been on the to-do list for too long. Time’s up, and I’m not going to renew the annual hosting fees; ergo, the end of the Tavern is near. Stay tuned until the end of August, a few more things to chew on before we celebrate the closing of the Tavern.
